A & P
This is a story of a group of young girls out enjoying a summer day. On there way home they stop into a story, still wearing their bathing suits, to get some herring for one of their mothers. The story is told from the store clerks perspective. As the girls are shopping the manager approaches them in a rude manner and tells them they can not wear such attire in his store, shirts and shoes required. He embarrasses the young girls and makes a scene in front of the house slaves in the store. Sammy, the young clerk, is disgusted by how his manager treats the girls and quits his job.
I think we have all at one time thought about walking out on a job, but would you ever have the nerve to do so? For Sammy his values and personal beliefs were stronger than his job.
In a situation like that I don't think I could quit my job. Maybe the setting has more to do with the situation than I think, but today it is standard that you cannot enter stores without shoes and a shirt. I admire Sammy's actions to a point. I do feel like he quit because of the manager's attitude towards the girls, but I also feel like Sammy might have quit to get some attention from the girls even though they were gone before he quit. I would like to say I would quit a job if I felt like it was compromising my beliefs, but it's easy to say and harder to do.
